🦀 Spicy Goan Crab Masala Recipe | Traditional Seafood Curry
A spicy, coconut-based coastal curry that captures the essence of Goan flavors⏱️ Cooking Time: 15–20 minutes

📝 Ingredients
- 4–5 fresh crabs (cleaned and cut into pieces)
- 1 tbsp red chili powder
- 1 cup grated coconut
- 3 garlic cloves
- 1-inch piece of ginger
- 1 tbsp coriander seeds
- 1 tbsp cumin seeds
- 1-inch cinnamon stick
- 4 black peppercorns
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- ½ tsp khus khus (poppy seeds)
- 1 tbsp oil
- 4 cloves
- 3 tbsp toddy vinegar or lemon juice
- 1 small onion (chopped)
- Small ball of tamarind
- 1 small tomato or 2 tbsp tomato puree
- Salt to taste
🍳 Instructions
1. Cook the Crabs
- In a pan, add crab pieces with a little water and salt.
- Cover and boil until the crabs are fully cooked and a delicious aroma is released.
- Set aside.
2. Prepare the Masala
- Heat oil in a pan. Add garlic, ginger, and chopped onion. Sauté until onions turn golden brown. Remove and keep aside.
- In the same pan, dry roast grated coconut along with coriander seeds, cumin seeds, cinnamon, cloves, peppercorns, turmeric powder, khus khus, and chili powder. Roast until aromatic.
3. Grind the Masala
- In a mixer grinder, blend the roasted coconut-spice mix with the sautéed onions, garlic, and ginger.
- Add the ball of tamarind and grind to a smooth paste using a little water.
4. Make the Curry
- Heat a kadai (deep pan), add the ground masala paste and bring to a gentle boil.
- Add the pre-cooked crab pieces, tomato puree (or chopped tomato), and salt.
- Pour in toddy vinegar or lemon juice. Mix well.
5. Simmer and Serve
- Let the curry simmer on low flame for about 15 minutes, allowing all the flavors to combine beautifully.
- Serve hot with steamed rice or Goan poee (bread).
