🌿 Goan Patoli & Motli Recipe | Traditional Monsoon Sweet Dish (Turmeric Leaf Special)

Patoli – Sweet Steamed Turmeric Leaf Delight

🌸 Festival Note

Patoli is a seasonal delicacy made during Shravan, especially for Nag Panchami. The aromatic turmeric leaves, filled with a mixture of coconut and jaggery, give this dish a heavenly flavor. Grandma says, “When the smell of steaming Patoli fills the house, we know the gods are pleased!”

📝 Ingredients

  1. Rice flour (or wheat flour) – 1 cup
  2. Grated coconut – 1 cup
  3. Jaggery – ¾ cup (grated)
  4. Salt – a pinch
  5. Ghee – for greasing
  6. Turmeric leaves – 6 (cleaned and washed)
  7. Steamer or cooker for steaming

👩‍🍳 Method

Prepare the Filling:

In a pan, mix grated coconut and jaggery.
Cook lightly till the jaggery melts and blends well. Set aside.

Prepare the Batter:
In a bowl, add rice flour, a pinch of salt, and water to make a smooth, spreadable batter. It should not be runny.

Assemble the Patoli:
Grease the turmeric leaves with ghee.
Spread a thin layer of rice batter on each leaf.
Add a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery filling in the center.
Fold the leaf sideways to seal it.

Steam the Patolis:
Place in a steamer or pressure cooker (without whistle).
Steam for 12–15 minutes.
Once done, gently peel the leaves and serve warm.

🍃 Motli – Jackfruit Leaf Sweet Cones

Variation of Patoli
Motli is a cone-shaped sweet made with the same coconut-jaggery filling, but instead of turmeric leaves, it uses jackfruit leaves tied into little cups.

To Make Motli:

Create cone-shaped cups from fresh jackfruit leaves and secure with toothpicks or thread.
Pour rice batter and add filling.
Steam as above, and serve after cooling slightly.

💡 Cooking Tips

  • Turmeric leaves add a unique aroma. Always use fresh, soft leaves.
  • If using wheat flour, keep the batter slightly thicker.
  • Serve with a drizzle of ghee for extra richness.
