Cabbage is a leafy vegetable available in green, red, purple, and white varieties. In Goan homes, cabbage is often cooked simply with coconut, mustard seeds, and green chilies, making it light, nutritious, and flavorful. This dish pairs perfectly with rice and curry or chapati.

🧂 Ingredients

  • 2 cups cabbage (washed and finely chopped)

  • ½ cup freshly grated coconut

  • 2 green chilies (slit or chopped)

  • 1 onion (finely chopped)

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

  • 1–2 tbsp channa dal (soaked for 15–20 minutes)

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 tsp oil

🍳 Method

  1. Prep the Cabbage

    • Wash the cabbage thoroughly and chop it into small pieces.

  2. Temper & Sauté

    • Heat oil in a pan.

    • Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.

    • Add chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.

  3. Cook the Cabbage

    • Add chopped cabbage and cover the pan with a lid.

    • Let it cook until the cabbage shrinks and softens.

  4. Add Spices & Coconut

    • Add turmeric powder, green chilies, soaked channa dal, and salt.

    • Mix well, then add grated coconut.

  5. Final Cook

    • Cover again and cook on low flame until everything is well combined and cooked through.

  • Serve hot with steamed rice and Goan curry

  • Enjoy as a dry side dish with chapati or bhakri
