📝 About the Recipe

Xinaneao (pronounced shi-na-ne-yo) is the Konkani word for mussels, a type of shellfish found abundantly along Goa’s coastline. While mussels are often prepared in a spicy coconut-based gravy, this recipe features a quick and delicious Rava Fry version, perfect as a side or starter.

🧂 Ingredients

  • 5–6 fresh mussels (Xinaneao), cleaned
  • ½ cup rava (semolina) for coating
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • Oil for shallow frying

🍳 Method

Clean the Mussels
  • Wash and clean the mussels thoroughly under running water to remove any grit or dirt.

Marinate
  • In a bowl, add the cleaned mussels.
  • Add salt, chili powder, turmeric powder, and ginger-garlic paste.
  • Mix well and let them marinate for 5–10 minutes.

Coat with Rava
  • Take semolina (rava) on a plate.
  • Coat each marinated mussel well on all sides.

Shallow Fry
  • Heat a flat pan (tawa) with oil on medium flame.
  • Once the oil is hot, gently place the coated mussels on the pan.
  • Fry until golden and crisp on both sides.
Serve
  • Serve hot as a starter or side dish with rice and Goan curry.
