Fried Modak – Crispy Sweet Coconut Dumplings

Modak is a beloved sweet prepared during Ganesh Chaturthi and Angarika Sankashti Chaturthi. It has a sweet filling inside and a golden crispy outer shell. Fried Modaks are especially loved by kids and are a must in many homes as prasad for Lord Ganesha. Sonu and Monu wait eagerly for the first batch to cool before they sneak a bite!

📝 Ingredients
- Maida (all-purpose flour) – 1 cup
- Grated coconut – 1 cup
- Jaggery – ¾ cup (grated)
- Salt – a pinch
- Oil – for deep frying
- Water – as needed
- Ghee – optional (for added aroma in filling)
👩🍳 Method
- In a mixing plate, add maida, a pinch of salt, and 1 tsp oil.
- Add water gradually and knead into a smooth dough.
- Cover and rest the dough for 15 minutes.
- In a bowl, mix grated coconut and jaggery.
- (Optional) Lightly roast the coconut in ghee for extra flavor.
- Make sure the mixture is not too wet.
- Divide the dough into small balls.
- Roll each into a small circle.
- Place a spoonful of filling in the center.
- Gently fold and create pleats around the filling.
- Bring all pleats to the top and pinch to seal.
- Heat oil in a kadai.
- Once hot, carefully drop in the modaks one by one.
- Fry on medium heat till golden brown and crisp.
- Drain on tissue paper and allow to cool.
💡 Cooking Tips
- If the filling is too sticky, add a little roasted rava to absorb moisture.
- Use modak moulds if you find pleating difficult.
- Do not overfill, or the modaks may break while frying.
